Natasha had her first sleepover the other night in Tirana with a friend. I gave them the big bed so they’d have enough space to be comfortable. And I made it up Scandinavian style, with separate duvet covers to support their individual sleep preferences. Prior to traveling, that’s not something I ever would’ve thought of, as I didn’t even know it was a thing! So I thought I’d share it here.
We first encountered this sleep setup on our trip to Portugal in 2022. Instead of a single duvet that covers the entire king (or double) sized bed, each side has separate duvet covers to allow for individual sleep preferences, and there’s no top sheet. It’s kind of genius, though it’s also easier to get tangled up.
We encountered the same setup in Salobreña, Spain (click for video short) and even at one of the resorts in Phuket, Thailand, which also had the trademark “pillow top” mattress topper. I’m not sure how common this is in Spain or Thailand at large, though; we didn’t have it in Madrid.

It was definitely the norm in Norway and Denmark and is typical across Scandinavia, where it originated. We even encountered it on our recent trip to Vienna.
Have you slept (or do you sleep) with separate covers like this? In which country? How did/do you like it?
